Why Is Murky Water Coming From My Water Filtration System?
What Does "Murky Water" Actually Mean?
Murky water can appear in a few different ways:
- Cloudy or milky appearance
- Tiny air bubbles that clear after a few seconds
- Brown, yellow, or gray tint
- Visible particles floating in the water
Each of these signs points to a different underlying issue.
Common Causes of Murky Water
1. Air Bubbles in the Water
One of the most common, and harmless causes of cloudy filtered water is trapped air. Filtration systems often contain ultra-fine pores that capture tiny air bubbles, which can create a cloudy appearance in the water. In fact, this is often a sign that the filter is working effectively. Filters with larger pores typically don’t trap these microbubbles and therefore may not produce cloudy water.
What it looks like: Cloudy water that clears from the bottom up after sitting for a minute.
Why it happens:
- Changes in water pressure
- Recent plumbing work, either in the building or on the street.
- Temperature fluctuations
Solution: No action is usually needed. If it persists, your system may need a pressure check.
2. New Filter Cartridges
If you've recently replaced your filters, murky water is completely normal and mostly due to the air that has been trapped in the micro pores of the filter.
What it looks like: Cloudiness or fine black or gray particles.
Why it happens: New carbon filters can release harmless carbon dust when first installed.
Solution: Run your tap for 5–10 minutes to flush the system.
3. Sediment Buildup
Over time, filters can collect dirt, rust, and debris.
What it looks like: Brown, yellow, or gritty water.
Why it happens:
- Old or clogged filters
- High sediment levels in your water supply
- Sediment and particulates is not normally present in reverse osmosis systems unless the post filters malfunction or haven't been changed on time.
Solution: Replace your sediment or carbon filters. Regular maintenance is key to preventing this issue.
4. Bacterial Growth
In rare cases, murky water may indicate contamination.
What it looks like: Cloudiness with unusual taste or odor.
Why it happens:
- Filters not replaced on schedule
- System left unused for long periods
Solution: Stop using the water and have your system professionally inspected immediately.
5. System Malfunction or Improper Installation
If your system isn't installed or maintained properly, it can affect water clarity.
What it looks like: Persistent murky water that doesn't clear and has noticeable particulates in it.
Why it happens:
- Incorrect filter setup
- Failing components
- Poor system design
Solution: Have a certified technician inspect your unit.
When Should You Be Concerned?
You should take action if:
- The water stays cloudy and is caused by noticeable particulates
- You notice a strange smell or taste
- The color is brown, yellow, or gray
